How to start a rental side hustle
If you own a camera, a power washer, a stand mixer, or a designer bag, there is almost certainly a neighbor who would happily pay to borrow it for a weekend. Peer-to-peer rental marketplaces turn the gear gathering dust in your closet into a recurring side income — without you ever having to sell what you own.
1. Pick the right items to rent out
The best rental items share three traits: they're expensive enough that people don't want to buy one, they're used occasionally rather than daily, and they're easy to inspect on pickup. Categories that consistently move on Lend Me:
- Cameras & lenses — weddings, vacations, content shoots.
- Power tools — pressure washers, tile saws, sanders, drills.
- Outdoor & camping — tents, kayaks, e-bikes, coolers.
- Event gear — projectors, PA systems, folding tables, bounce houses.
- Designer fashion — bags, watches, formalwear for one-night events.
2. Set a competitive daily price
A simple rule of thumb: a daily rental should be roughly 3–8% of the item's replacement cost. A $1,200 camera body that rents at $60/day pays for itself in twenty rentals. Offer a weekly discount (usually 4–5× the daily rate, not 7×) to attract longer bookings. On Lend Me there is 0% commission, so the price you set is the price you keep.
3. Take photos that actually convert
Borrowers scroll fast. Lead with a clean hero shot on a neutral background, then add detail shots of any wear or accessories included. Listings with five or more photos book noticeably more often than single-photo listings.
4. Protect yourself with deposits and ID verification
Every Lend Me listing supports a refundable deposit that's held until the item is returned in the agreed condition. Pair that with our mandatory ID verification for borrowers and the pre-rental inspection photos required by our Rental Agreement, and you have a rental-car-style paper trail if anything goes wrong.
5. Build a reputation early
Your first five rentals matter the most. Respond quickly, hand items over clean and charged, and ask happy borrowers to leave a review. A solid star rating moves your listings higher in search results and unlocks higher-trust borrowers down the line.
